Great question! In our own journey to non-toxic lifestyle, skincare was the first thing we wanted to change (I mean we actually put this stuff on our skin, right?!). We found that cost was a preventative barrier to using any ready-made products of good quality. We decided to change that. By ditching brick and mortar, and focusing on quality without the frills (sorry friends, no unicorn dust when you unbox), we've been able to source amazing quality ingredients (from Canadian companies, to boot!) that actually work (check our Evidence Page) and we've pared down our margins and operating costs to remove barriers to switching to non-toxic skincare.
We decided to prioritize accessibility over sourcing exclusively organic ingredients. In the journey towards the non-toxic lifestyle, ditching the commercial skincare products and moving to nature-based is already a hugely effective step. Organic is the ideal, and something to strive for, but we don't want to perpetuate the all-or-nothing mindset that holds so many people back from taking a step into natural skincare. We sourced the best quality ingredients and our products are a minimum of 73% organic ingredients.
We will likely include a purely organic line in the future, but our main mission is to get the best products out there while still being reaonsbly affordable.
It's a bit of a complex issue because it's dependant on many factors. We intentionally do not use preservatives in our products as they are made in small batches and using fresh products is ideal for optimum impact. We also aim to limit unnatural and potentially toxic ingredients. As such, how you treat your product will be the biggest determining factor and we therefore cannot give a definite date, but rather a guideline.
As our products are 100% oil / lipid based, the "expiry" really means when the oils will oxidize. The biggest concern with oxidation is increased sensitivity / reactivity on skin. What increases oil oxidation will be exposure to light, heat, and oxygen.
Our most vulnerable oils are the citrus essential oils (grapefruit, bergamot, and orange) and hemp oil. If you keep your products in a cool dark place with the cap tightly sealed, most products will be fine for at least a year as we make them in small batches.
One exception would be our facial oil, as the hemp oil is more likely to oxidize (though is protected slightly by mixing it with the other oils), which would be roughly 6 months. Our products are packaged in small enough quantities that they could be used up well within these timelines.
We do recommend keeping your products in a cool dark place, with the lid tightly sealed when not in use. We also do not recommend bulk purchasing / stocking up as our products are best used fresh.
